National Disability Insurance Scheme forum for women with disabilities in Perth

What does the NDIS mean for women with disabilities?

The Productivity Commission has undertaken an inquiry into a National Disability Long-term Care and Support Scheme and has recommended the establishment of a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Women With Disabilities WA Inc (WWDWA Inc) is inviting women with
disabilities to a Forum in Perth to hear your thoughts on the proposed scheme.

Happy (belated) International Women's Day 2011

This post is a day late, but better late than never, right? ;-) The 8th of March is International Women's Day.

"International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements regardless of divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political."

Women with disabilities are one of the most marginalised groups of women around the world, we are more vulnerable to abuse, poverty and institutionalization than ablebodied women or men with disabilities, regardless of what country we live in.

Regardless, many women with disabilities around the world have been and are continuing to demand a better life for all women with disabilities. We are celebrating our achievements in the face of great prejudice and discrimination. This video exemplifies that celebration.

Holiday Break for WWDWA Inc

WWDWA Inc will be on temporary hiatus until Monday 24 January 2011.

It's been a quiet year for WWDWA Inc, but we will be back with all fires blazing in 2011, starting with the 2010 AGM being held in late February. Details of this and other information will be sent out in the first newsletter for 2011 when we start up again.

New Group For Women With Disabilities In Rockingham Area

The Rockingham Women With Disabilities Group meets the third Monday of each month at the South Coastal Women's Health Service, 4 Civic Blvd, Rockingham.

The group meets to discuss issues, to offer support to one another and as a networking forum. The group is very informal and meets from 12 - 1.30pm, please bring your own lunch.

WWDWA Inc has started back, after an extended holiday break. And I am delighted to say that the monthly forums are also back, thanks to a generous donation.

In October 2009 a forum for women with disabilities in the Rockingham area was held. South Coastal Women's Health Services, the City of Rockingham, the Disability Services Commission and Women With Disabilities WA Inc all collaborated to create an opportunity for women with disabilities in Rockingham and surrounding areas to get together and talk about what was needed to improve healthcare services in Rockingham

It was a fantastic event, and I was thrilled to meet so many passionate and determined women who wanted to be involved in making changes for themselves and other women with disabilities.

They are now meeting on a regular basis down in Rockingham. I will put up more information about the meetings very soon.

This year we are looking at starting up forums in the Midland area. Stay tuned for more updates!

2m Australians living with multiple disabilities: study

"AN estimated 10 per cent of Australians, or two million people, suffered from two or more disabilities, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
While the institute's report includes the infirmities of old age, it found that half of all children aged under 15 years with psychiatric disability (42,300) or acquired brain injury (11,500) had three or more disabilities, followed by over one-third of children with sensory-speech (48,100) or intellectual disability (55,100).

More than half of people aged 15 to 44 with acquired brain injury (more than 85,000 people) or intellectual disability (over 95,000 people) had three or more disabilities."

Where there's a will

"While many of us take for granted the ability to take a spontaneous trip or "wing it" when travelling, for those with a disability it is not that simple. Travelling with a disability, or accompanying a disabled traveller, takes a good deal of planning, research, patience and humour, but where there is a will, there is nearly always a way."

"Learning To Walk" Book Launch - Aug 9th

"Learning To Walk" by Lisa Burnette

"On June 12, 2000 Lisa Burnette entered Royal London Hospital suffering
from meningococcal septicaemia - a life threatening infection. After the
removal of her legs, nine operations and five months in hospital Lisa
began a grueling recovery process. Moving back to her native Australia,
Lisa had to leave behind the carefree lifestyle of her early twenties
and begin a new life; life as an amputee. It was to be the start of a
powerful journey for Lisa. Of the strenuous physical challenges to
recovery mapped against the inevitable emotional hurdles. It has been a
journey with numerous layers, a journey she continues to this day and a
journey that Lisa now makes step by step."

by The Hon Bill Shorten, MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services

Mr Shorten will speak on the human rights and social justice aspects of the National Disability Strategy, particularly in light of Australia’s recent ratification of the International Convention on human rights and disability.

Elected as the Labor member for Maribyrnong on November 24, 2007, Bill Shorten was also appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children’s Services by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

On 25 February 2009, the Prime Minister allocated to Mr Shorten the additional responsibility of Parliamentary Secretary for Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction.

This lecture is co-sponsored with the Western Australian Disability Collective, a local collective working for justice for people with a disability through education, action and community campaigns.

The lecture is free and no rsvp is required to attend.

When: 6 August at 6.00pm
Venue: Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWA. The lecture theatre is accessible, has an audio loop and an auslan interpreter will be provided.

Standing Up For The Ones Who Have To Sit

PICTURE this: you are strolling down a quiet side street. A man unknown to you, kids in tow, is walking in your direction on the opposite footpath.

He stops, bends over, grinning. "How are we today, then?" He addresses you loudly, across the road. He uses that high, sing-song register usually reserved for very young children.

In the chemist's you take a moment to find your wallet. "Take your time, dear!" says the sales assistant, in similar honey-pitched tones. "No rush! Can I help you?"

Of course, neither incident would ever happen — unless, like me, you are in a wheelchair or a battery-powered buggy.

Geri Jewell: It's Always Back to Square One

In the early '80s, Geri Jewell was hand-picked by Norman Lear for his show "The Facts of Life," making her the first person with a visible disability -- cerebral palsy -- to appear as a regular performer on a primetime sitcom.

The show was a huge hit ... and Jewell was huge. She couldn't go to Disneyland without being bombarded by fans.

The Department of Health's Mental Health Division are undertaking a review of mental health services. This includes consultation with stakeholders. The State Mental Health Policy and Strategic Plan 2010-20 for WA will guide the reform of mental health services, focussing on wellness, early intervention and recovery. Improving the mental health of all Western Australians is the shared responsibility of all levels of government, private and non-government sector agencies and the wider community. WHO ARE WE?

We are a non-profit incorporated organisation that is run BY women with disabilities FOR women with disabilities. We are currently supported in our work by the Ethnic Disability Advocacy Centre who provide the co-ordinator with office space and administration support.

WHAT DO WE DO?

We have monthly forums on a wide range of topics of interest to women with disabilities in Perth. The forums are held on the 3rd or 4th Sunday of every month at the Subiaco Arts Centre, 180 Hamersley Road, Subiaco from 1-4 pm. We also provide input to goverment and the community on the issues that women with disabilities face. Women With Disabilities WA Inc were finalists in the 2007 Community Services Industry Awards.

WHAT SORT OF ISSUES DO WE DEAL WITH?

So far the forums have covered a range of topics including: women’s health and sexuality, first aid, protective behaviours, menopause, financial management, self defence and healthy eating. Future forums planned include: volunteering, independent living, keeping fit with a disability, and much, much more. We work to provide input on health, family and domestic violence, housing, employment, parenting, sexual health and financial issues as well as supporting each other to become more involved in advocating for a better future for women with disabilities.

WHO CAN BE INVOLVED?

Women with any kind of disability – for example, physical, intellectual, sensory and mental health disabilities. We also need able-bodied women as volunteers to help out at the forums. We are a fun, friendly group of women from a variety of backgrounds, and always welcome new members. Come along!

Hi everyone and welcome to Women With Disabilities WA Inc's blog. This will be our internet presence until we have the time to develop an official website. I will be posting information to our upcoming forums and other events here as well as everything else that I come across that will be of interest to women with disabilities in Western Australia.

There will be no monthly forum in July, as this is usually our winter break time - and who wants to leave the house in winter! We have recently applied for more funding to run the forums and they should start again towards the end of August. I will put the date up here closer to the time, so keep checking back.
